Estimating Value

How do you value a mixed pile of scrap?

Short answer: Sort it into the main metals using a magnet and your eyes, weigh each group, treat any small leftover group as the lowest-value metal and value each group at its own price, because a mixed pile valued at a single average price is nearly always either too optimistic or too pessimistic, while a sorted estimate is accurate enough to compare with offers.

Magnet first

Steel and iron split off immediately, leaving the non-ferrous metals.

Group the rest

Copper, brass, aluminium and stainless each get their own group.

Value each group

Use the price for each, and be cautious about the leftover group.
