Estimating Value

How do you estimate what a load of scrap is worth?

Short answer: Sort the load by metal, weigh each group, look up a current price per kilogram for each metal in your grade, multiply weight by price, add the results and then reduce the total by a realistic allowance for dirt, attachments and the buyer's margin, which gives a figure you can use to judge any offer, whereas a rough estimate made in five minutes is far better than none.

Sort and weigh

Separate the metals and weigh each group, since each has its own price.

Multiply and add

Weight times price for each metal, then add the results for a total.

Allow for reality

Reduce the total by a margin for contamination and the buyer’s own costs.
